Getting Around Port Canaveral

The terminals sit inside a working port, not in a town centre. Most visitors take a ride-share, a taxi or a tour with pickup.

  • Uber or LyftBoth operate at the port. Drivers can drop you in front of the terminal.
  • Public busSpace Coast Area Transit Route 9 runs through Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach for $1.50 a ride. Its stops are on the roads outside the port, not at the cruise terminals, so it suits a day out more than arriving with luggage.
  • Tours with pickupSome tours, such as the Kennedy Space Center trip, pick you up at the ship.

Getting to Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral is 42 miles from Orlando International Airport (MCO), about 45 minutes by car.

Parking at the Terminals

Every terminal has its own garage or surface lot, so you park and walk in. Parking is $20 a day plus tax, counting the day you sail and the day you return. You pay by card when you drive in, with no reservation needed. Lots open at 10 AM on sailing day and are patrolled 24 hours. Some hotels near the port also offer cruise parking and shuttles.

Watch a Rocket Launch

People on Jetty Park beach watching an Atlas V rocket climb into the sky

Port Canaveral is on the Space Coast, and the port calls itself one of the best places to watch a rocket launch. Jetty Park beach, at the harbour mouth, has views of launches and passing ships.

On big launch days Jetty Park’s passes can sell out and public parking fills, so plan ahead. NASA and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex publish the launch schedule; the Visitor Complex also sells launch-viewing tickets.

Safety and Weather

Port Canaveral and the beach towns around it have less crime than most of Florida. The things to plan for are the sea, the sun and summer storms.

  • CrimeIn 2025 the Sheriff’s area that includes Cape Canaveral recorded about 45% less violent crime and 40% less property crime per resident than the Florida average.
  • Walking to townNot really. The terminals sit inside the port, and the centre of Cape Canaveral, around City Hall, is about 1.5 to 2.7 miles away; Cocoa Beach Pier is 3 to 4 miles. Most people take a taxi or ride-share. Jetty Park beach is the one easy walk, and walkers get in free.
  • The beachSwim where lifeguards are on duty, usually 10 AM to 5 PM at Jetty Park, Cocoa Beach Pier, Shepard Park and Lori Wilson Park. Rip currents cause more than 80% of ocean rescues; if one catches you, swim parallel to the shore. Swimming in the port inlet is not allowed.
  • WeatherExpect highs around 72°F in winter and 90°F in summer. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms.

Crime figures: Florida Department of Law Enforcement, 2025, per resident. Weather: NOAA 1991–2020 normals.
