Tenerife

A volcano island with a capital at the pier.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife puts the Castillo de San Cristóbal, the Palmetum garden and the capital's main market close to your ship. Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, and the Anaga laurel forest need a longer day.

If you do one thing here

Ride the Teide Cable Car

A Teide cable car cabin above the Teide caldera

Teide is about 12,200 feet high, the highest point in Spain. The cable car climbs in about 8 minutes from the base station at about 7,700 feet to La Rambleta at about 11,700 feet. The trail from there to the crater needs a free permit from Teide National Park, so the cable car ticket alone does not cover it.

The base station is about 40 miles by road from the pier, about 1 to 1½ hours each way without traffic. The cable car stops for wind or cold, and you must be at the boarding area 20 minutes before your slot. Wear closed hiking or sports shoes: the operator bans heels and open shoes. The operator lists tickets from €24.
